The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (AmazonClassics Edition) by Robert Louis Stevenson (AmazonClassics) 4.5 Stars (3,631 Reviews)    Price verified 41 minutes ago

Dr. Henry Jekyll, fascinated by the dichotomy of good and evil, no longer wants to inhibit his dark side. He concocts a potion to create the alter ego of Mr. Edward Hyde. With the burden of evil placed on Hyde, Jekyll can now take pleasure in his immoral, nefarious fantasies -- free of conscience and guilt. It's when Hyde turns to murder that Jekyll realizes how monstrous his impulses are and how hard they are to suppress. Exploring the nature of shame, repression, desire, and control, Stevenson's story has so endured that "a Jekyll and Hyde personality" has become part of our lexicon in understanding our own -- sometimes involuntary -- duality. Revised edition: Previously published as The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, this edition of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions.

Imogene's Marriage of Convenience: Anthology of Frontier & Amish Romance by Hannah Winstone Price verified 53 minutes ago

"What if I asked you to marry me? I own a ranch, I have enough money to support all three of you, and my house is more than big enough." Michael paused, wincing as if just realising the full extent of his own words. "What I mean is - we would be married in law only. I would not expect anything from you and we would simply share a house. A marriage of convenience, if you will." Imogene opened her mouth - to shout, to order him to leave, anything - but all that left her lips was a heavy sigh. If Michael was as genuine as he seemed, it was a decent option. It was either that or let her children starve. With a sigh, Imogene looked him in the eyes and muttered, "I suppose it's better than my other options. All right, then." They looked at each other for a long moment; her eyes dark and sombre, his concerned but relieved. The only thought that passed her mind was what have I just agreed to?

Jacobite: The Early Years by Parker Jon 4.9 Stars (6 Reviews)    Price verified one hour ago

The Jacobite uprising of 1715, in support of the Old Pretender, has failed with the defeat of the Earl of Mar at the battle of Sheriffmuir. Across the glens of the Highlands, the warrior class is racked with discontent, seething with smouldering resentment. The hated redcoats are tightening their remorseless, savage grip on the land. Under the military stewardship of Major General Gates, they restrain the clans' warlike aspirations. English soldiers construct a series of military roads and bridges, occupy the main existing Scottish fortifications and erect new strategic barracks for their troops. The old warrior clan system of The Highlands is under strain. Clan chiefs are ignoring their feudal obligations. They and the hereditary landowners are flexing their financial muscles, embracing the English concept of profit, which eventually, a century later, results in the highland clearances and the total breakdown of the clan system. James (Jamie) Macdonald, the younger son of the clan chief of Glen Coe, is forced to leave his home, excommunicated by the actions of his domineering father and by the evil machinations of his older brother. In the company of Black Dog Macgregor, a forsworn man, they embark on the life of cattle drovers, agreeing to herd the Macdonald animals across the bleak highlands of Scotland and along the wild, untamed border. They are to supply the various English garrisons with cattle and sheep. To achieve this, the two must protect the herds from the raiders and bandits infesting the wilds of Scotland and its borders. To this end, they engage the services of the most notorious border reiver of all, Bloody Tom Kilpatrick, along with his band of cutthroats. These men owe no allegiance to either kingdom; they are only bound together by their blood oaths to each other and their liking for plunder!

Soul Thief. Bartender. Bounty Hunter. Check out the first book in the bestselling Zyan Star Series for FREE! When offered a job on the Holy Representative's special security team, bounty hunter Zyan Star couldn't be less interested - until she finds out it's her most hated of exes they're trying to track down. She's had over two hundred years to fantasize about revenge. She just didn't quite imagine it playing out alongside the emissaries of Heaven. Working with Eli, the uptight angel who heads up the HR's security, is just about as much fun as Zy expects. He of course wants her ex brought to justice through legal avenues, which is very inconvenient and incredibly boring. As she dives into the case, however, she realizes there's more at stake than her plot for payback. Like, the free will of mankind, and preventing the minions of hell from taking over the sovereign dimensions. This job is going to push her to the limits of her abilities, and there's just a slight problem with that: the powers she's suppressed for centuries after losing control of them are exactly the powers she's going to need to save the HR, end her millennia-old ex, and stop Lucifer's little plot to join the party and invade Earth. Savior of humanity? Not so much. Or so she thought. "Urban fantasy is up there with my favorite genres to read, and A.A. Chamberlynn is quickly becoming my go-to author." T.F. What sort of man calls himself the Lump? The kind who wants people to mind their own mud-kissing business! Thirteen years ago Oliver's father died in a battle against Red Line, the savage dragon that plagued Aardland. Oliver has since grown into a very large man with little ambition, earning him a new name: "The Lump." When Flynn, a glory seeking adventurer, and Meena, a mysterious foreign girl, arrive with news that Red Line has stirred once again, the Lump finds himself reluctantly embroiled in a quest to defeat the dragon. Their journey becomes as dangerous as the dragon when the party runs afoul of beasts, brigands and an abbot named Costello. Meena has a strange gift that even she doesn't understand. Flynn begins to understand that glory has nothing to do with being a hero. Secret knowledge from a hidden tome may hold the key to conquering the dragon. Will the Lump be able to succeed where his father failed? Or, will it take his death to prove heroes are fools? Praise for Dragon In The Needles: "This was a delightful romp in the world of sword and sorcery. Bruce Leslie conjures up loads of adventure, and hijinks. Casting a spellbinding tale worthy of some of the legends in the genre." - GenericJedi "If there's anyone who can tell a hero's tale it is Bruce Leslie." - Ryan Stormer

Things That Go Bump In the Night by Gerrard Wilson (Lulu.com) 5.0 Stars (1 Review)    Price verified 2 hours ago

When we were young, we all had something that we were scared of, when the lights went out. The thing that scared me the most was the box of toys stored underneath my bed. During the day I loved that box, the box that contained all of my favourite toys, the ones that I loved playing with on Saturday mornings, when I had a lie in, when mum gave me breakfast in bed. I can still remember it so clearly, rushing through breakfast as fast as was humanly possible, so mum could take away the tray and replace it with my box of toys from under my bed. Once it was there, safely ensconced on top of the blankets in front of me, I would make my way through it, playing with every one of my toys, oblivious to the world outside. I was so happy. During the day, I saw my toy box as no threat; it was my best friend. Unfortunately, after dark, when mum had turned off the light in my bedroom, that very same toy box turned into something so scary it had me shaking with fright.

Diabolic Candelabra: A Bobby Owen Mystery by E.R. Punshon (Dean Street Press) 4.3 Stars (18 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

"Ode to a chocolate," murmured Bobby. Olive, Inspector Bobby Owen's wife, is on a mission to obtain the recipe for some uncommonly good chocolates. But the most innocent beginning means trouble for Bobby Owen: take one wood-dwelling hermit, a girl who talks to animals, an evil stepfather and two exceedingly valuable works of art, and you have the recipe, not for chocolate, but for one of Punshon's most satisfying and devilish mysteries. This beguiling story of labyrinths and seemingly impossible murder is a challenge and a treat for armchair sleuths everywhere. Diabolic Candelabra was originally published in 1942. It is the seventeenth of the Bobby Owen mysteries, a series including thirty-five novels. This new edition features an introduction by crime fiction historian Curtis Evans. "What is distinction?... in the works of Mr. E.R. Punshon we salute it every time." Dorothy L. Sayers

CLASSROOM CARNAGE by Bryn M Parry 2.6 Stars (4 Reviews)    Price verified 6 hours ago

Desperate, and fairly incompetent,Todd Percival is not having a very good week. His downstairs neighbour's night terrors have left him devoid of the substantial period of sleep which is absolutely essential for anyone contemplating a day of teaching Science to some 'less than enthusiastic' teenagers. When his woes are compounded by the double-whammy of his headmaster leaving the sinking ship to do a moonlight-flit to a different continent and the heartbreaking discovery that the love interest he has worshipped (from across a crowded, de-motivated, staffroom) had taken to French kissing a much more desirable male colleague than he, Todd decided to take stock of his present lifestyle/rut. True to his purely sedentary character, Mr Percival decided to tough it out until pensionable age or death (whichever came first). Bizarrely, the latter of this brace of eventualities was soon to rear its ugly, fatalistic, head when our questionable hero suffered a pre-planned, and almost lethal, electrocution event. The perpetrator of this 'full-body ionisation' could have been any one of a legion of suspects who had an axe to grind concerning the clinically unlucky, and slightly charrred, victim. Even with the help of the finest brains of the Merseyside Police Force, Todd was unable to discover the identity of the psychotic mind behind this darkest of deeds (and also the, particularly gruesome, murders of two of his acquaintances). Fearing a follow-up dosage of voltage he took the life-changing, and potentially life-preserving, decision to quit is quasi-career and take a year out to 'find himself' (you'll have to ask him what that means... ) whilst travelling around this beautiful little planet of ours. A catalogue of calamities accumulate in poor 'Percy's' diary entries as he struggled to come to terms with the colourful cultures of his first series of destinations in South America. Unfortunately, but not unsurprisingly, things go terribly badly (and we're talking disastrously ...

The Godmother by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (Amazon) Price verified 7 hours ago

Leopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch (1836 -1895) was an Austrian writer, famous for his stories set in the multi-ethnic eastern European area known in his time as Galicia, which comprised parts of modern day Poland, Ukraine, Austria and other countries. Most of his over thirty works remain untranslated into English. Until recently, his novel 'Venus in Furs' was his only book commonly available in that language. This present work was published in 1883 in German under the title 'Die Gottesmutter' - and was first released as an e-book in English in 2015 with the directly translated title 'The Mother of God'. That one has now been withdrawn and after multiple edits, this new version has been renamed 'The Godmother', though the expression 'Mother of God' still appears within its pages. That term refers to the main character, the female leader of a bizarre religious cult who exerts enormous power over her adoring flock, which believes her to be in some way the reincarnation of the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. After a chance encounter with a peasant farmer named Sabadil, the story focuses on the relationship between the two, and follows the development of an intense but unrequited infatuation on the part of the man. As it progresses, the reader becomes progressively more aware of the callousness and ruthlessness in the woman's nature, elements which lead explosively to a horrifying conclusion for both of them.

Murder in Somerset County: An Avery Fox Cozy Mystery (Avery Fox Cozy Mysteries Book 1) by Jane T. O'Brien 4.6 Stars (5 Reviews)    Price verified 7 hours ago

Avery Amelia Fox, a twenty-something, independent woman, is the only child of Avery and Amelia Fox, prominent citizens of the exclusive village of Hidden Oaks. Her name is both a blessing and a curse. A curse because her parents are well known in a world of insufferable snobs. A blessing because Avery, despite her abhorrence to her parents' world, loves them and is grateful for the advantages being a Fox offspring has allowed her. Avery's childhood was spent with a succession of nannies and private schools. Her favorite was Nanny Jacqueline who entertained her with stories of growing up in a houseful of siblings. From an early age, Avery felt more comfortable with the household help than the children of her mother's arrogant acquaintances. During the school year, Avery teaches creative writing courses at the community college. This summer she has rented a cabin in the hills of Somerset County writing romantic mystery novels. Riding her Schwinn on a path in the remote hills she spots a body sprawled on the rocks below. Finding cell service sketchy, she carefully works her way down the rocks to the motionless body. She stifles a scream when she recognizes the dead man as her former fiancé, Roger Throckmorton.
